Tesla (TSLA) has launched a new Model 3 RWD Long Range in the United States. This new Rear-Wheel Drive variant is a tier above the base Model 3 RWD Standard.

The new Tesla Model 3 RWD Long Range version comes with 363 miles of range. The base Model 3 RWD has 272 miles of EPA estimated range. So, the new Model 3 RWD Long Range has 91 miles of extra range.

Aside from the added range, the newly launched Model 3 RWD Long Range is also quicker. While the base Model 3 RWD Standard accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, the Model 3 RWD Long Range can do it in just 4.9 seconds.

The real question is, for the added range and better acceleration, how much extra does this new variant cost above the Standard Model 3 RWD?

Tesla has set the price of the new Model 3 RWD Long Range at $42,490. Apparently, it is $3,500 more expensive than the base RWD version which is priced at $38,990 but it can cost less than the base variant — we’ll let you know how.

The issue with the Tesla Model 3 Standard is that it does not qualify for the US federal EV tax credit program. The new Model 3 RWD Long Range qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit. Eligible individuals and families can get the full advantage of this scheme and get a direct price reduction at the time of purchase of the Tesla Model 3 RWD Long Range.

After the deduction of the $7,500 federal tax credit, the new Tesla Model 3 RWD Long Range costs $34,990. This is $4,000 cheaper than the base Model 3 RWD which costs $38,990.

If you qualify for the federal EV tax credit, it’s the best time for you to buy the new Model 3 RWD Long Range for $4K less and still get 91 miles of extra range and 0.9 seconds of improved 0-60 mph acceleration.

Tesla’s online car configurator does not explicitly mention that the Long Range RWD Model 3 is cheaper than the Model 3 RWD Standard. But when you follow the following procedure, you will see the relevant prices after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit as you can see in the screenshot above.

If you click/tap the “Customize” link beside the Federal Tax Credit and Gas Savings toggle on the configurator. You can set the gas savings to 0 by putting 1 mile per year in the customization form. This will give you the actual prices after the federal tax credit deduction, not including estimated gas savings.

Tesla has launched the new Model 3 Long Range RWD in the United States only. This suggests that this variant is currently only being produced at the electric automaker’s Fremont car factory.

Tesla Model 3 RWD Long Range can be a temporary offer or Tesla might get rid of the base variant if its sales drop after this launch.

Tesla also sent out emails to let their customers and fans know the benefits of getting the new Model 3 Long Range RWD. Tesla says it’s “Built for Distance” with its 363 miles of range.
