Tesla (TSLA) meets its final milestone of the September Full Self-Driving over-the-air (OTA) software update release roadmap with the Cybertruck FSD release.
As of this writing, the automaker started rolling out FSD for Cybertruck just a few hours ago with version 12.5.5 (firmware version 2024.32.20).
Tesla FSD v12.5.5 also includes the anticipated “End-to-End on Highway” neural net-based decision-making along with the Cybertruck FSD (release notes below).
This is a major upgrade over previous FSD versions where Tesla cars made decisions based on coded instructions, with End-to-End, Tesla AI is now responsible for making decisions on highways. Navigating city streets is already End-to-End neural net since the launch of FSD v12.
Since it’s a new update, it’s going to be available for the early access group and YouTubers first. If all goes well, Tesla will start the wide release of Cybertruck FSD.
Cybertruck owners felt disappointed that September was almost over and they did not get the FSD 12.5 on their newly bought electric pickup trucks. However, with Cybertruck FSD v12.5.5 and End-to-End on Highway, the Tesla AI development team completed all of their FSD tasks for the month.
This implies that whenever other Tesla vehicles receive the FSD v12.5.5 update, they will also get the End-to-End on Highway neural net driving and get upgraded from the legacy highway stack. Since the Cybertruck received FSD for the first time, it directly got the End-to-End on Highway update.
It will be very interesting to see how Tesla Autopilot FSD works on a large and unconventionally-designed pickup truck. We will be covering first impression videos in our next Cybertruck FSD update, so stay tuned. Let’s read the release notes below.
Official Release Notes: Cybertruck FSD v12.5.5 (2024.32.20)
FSD (Supervised) v12 upgrades the city-streets driving stack to a single end-to-end neural network trained on millions of video clips, replacing over 300k lines of explicit C++ code.
- includes vision-based attention monitoring with sunglasses
- includes End to End on Highway
Upcoming Improvements:
- Earlier and more natural lane change decisions
- Improved performance in parking lots
- Improved performance at intersections and stops
- Introduction of Speed Profile
Note: This is an early access build. You or anyone you authorize must use additional caution and remain attentive. It does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Under your supervision, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can drive your Tesla almost anywhere. It will make lane changes, select forks to follow your navigation route, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns. You and anyone you authorize must use additional caution and remain attentive. It does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is enabled on your vehicle. To use the feature, pull the drive stalk down once. You can disable Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Autopilot Settings.
Vision-Based Attention Monitoring
When Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is enabled, the driver monitoring system primarily relies on the cabin camera to determine driver attentiveness. Cabin camera must have clear visibility (e.g., camera is not occluded, eyes, arms are visible, there is sufficient cabin illumination, and the driver is looking forward at the road). In other circumstances, the driver monitoring system will primarily rely on torque-based (steering wheel) monitoring to detect driver attentiveness.
if the cabin camera detects attentiveness, a warning will appear. The warning can be dismissed by the driver immediately reverting their attention back to the road ahead. Warnings will escalate depending on the nature and frequency of detected inattentiveness, with continuous inattention to a Strikeout.
