2026 Tesla Spring Update feature: watch the blind spot warning accent lights in action

Tesla (TSLA) rolled out a ton of new features in this year’s Spring software update (firmware version 2026.14 and later). One of these new features is the creative use of the cabin’s accent lights as a blind spot warning mechanism

Tesla is the first mainstream automaker to use interior ambient lighting to warn the driver of blind spots. The 2026 Spring Update release notes explain the feature as:

Blind Spot Warning Accent Lights

Accent lights now turn red when an object is in your blind spot and your turn signal is engaged, or when an approaching object is detected while parked.

Tesla used even more creativity and its AI technology to distinguish blind spots on the left and right. If a vehicle is approaching from behind in a blind spot on the right, only the right door’s accent light will turn red. The same applies to the left side.

However, if a vehicle is approaching from a difficult-to-see angle, such as a blinded turn at an intersection, the front and side (left or right) accent lights will turn red (see videos below).

This distinction among traffic scenarios allows Tesla drivers to know from which angle a blind-spot vehicle or object is approaching. This increases the safety for drivers and occupants of the Tesla, as well as other cars and vulnerable road users (VRUs).

For the accent lights, there is a large spectrum of colors that Tesla users can choose from. Since a blind spot is a warning, Tesla has chosen a bright red color to grab the attention of the driver.

The tech & AI automaker is using the accent lights of its vehicles in different ways. Last year, with an over-the-air (OTA) software update 2025.26, Tesla rolled out an option to sync your car’s ambient lights to music and turn it into a rave cave.

Tesla’s fusion of software technology and excellent engineering from the ground up provides precise control over each LED in the accent lights. This allows the software engineers to use a previously thought decorative feature as a useful tool for safety.

This precise control over interior and exterior lighting also allows Tesla to modify and improve lighting features (such as Matrix Headlights) via free OTA software updates. Traditional automakers still lack these features on their mass production cars in this day and age of the 21st century.
