Tesla CEO & Technoking Elon Musk has just announced on Twitter that the next major release of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software V11 has started rolling out. Since Musk loves easter eggs, he said that this update rolled out at 11:11 pm pacific time.
Moments before this confirmation by Musk, I was discussing this update with TeslaScope. They reported that a new update version 2022.40.5 has been detected on a Tesla employee’s Model 3 car. But a confirmation if this was actually V11 was pending.
For non-FSD Beta owners, Tesla pushed a large software update version 2022.40.4 with improvements and new features just last week. This is just a point behind the FSD Beta 11 update version 2022.40.5.
At the time of this writing, it has just been less than 2 hours since the rollout began, so, Tesla’s internal testing employees will be the first in line to get FSD Beta V11. Release notes are also not yet available for this major Tesla OTA software release.
Most of the Tesla Community on Twitter believes that this is going to be the turning point where the Tesla software team has decided to deliver a single stack of software for all of its customers. However, Musk did not respond to questions if FSD Beta V11 is actually single stack.
So, what’s “single stack” anyway? Tesla currently has two main branches of software that it releases separately for FSD Beta users and non-FSD Beta cars. These software releases even have different version numbers. Single stack is going to unify both of these branches and one software will be rolled out to all either with V11 or in the future.
However, Tesla single stack needs more explanation so I asked the Tesla Community on Twitter to explain this phenomenon like I was 5 (ELI5). I am posting some good replies to the question below.
“We’re trying to have a single stack for both highway & city streets, but it requires massive NN retraining,” Elon Musk tweeted about single stack in August last year.
Tesla has been preparing for the wide release of FSD Beta towards the end of this year. To realize this, the electric automaker has started free camera upgrades for its old Tesla Model S, 3, and X vehicles as well.
The release of FSD Beta V11 and Single Stack will accelerate the wide release of FSD Beta to all Tesla owners in North America. A wide release in the coming weeks/months would be a huge development for Tesla and the Autopilot software after FSD Beta 10.69.3 received some good reviews.

Update: Elon Musk has just posted an update on FSD Beta V11. He says the magnitude of V11 is so that it will take a few weeks to expand to beta users (currently 160K) and another few weeks are needed for wide release to the US & Canadian Tesla owners.
