World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Tesla Cybertruck patent yesterday. This new international patent details the advanced engineering and technology Tesla has used to design the power tailgate of the Cybertruck (patent PDF below).
Tesla is putting Cybertruck prototypes through rigorous testing and validation for more than a year now. This testing has shifted into top gear in 2023 as the automaker is aiming for the start of Cybertruck production and deliveries this year.
This new power tailgate patent for the Cybertruck just came in time. This Tesla patent also confirms that the Cybertruck will have a powered tailgate.
Tesla’s WIPO patent #WO2023114084 also mentions that the users will be able to operate the Cybertruck power tailgate with Tesla mobile app and also with the wireless key fob.
The patent document further discusses the advantages of the Tesla-designed power system for the Cybertruck. Tesla states that this system is both simplified and compact. This allows this power system to be efficiently and concisely installed in the vehicle with a minimal appearance.
Part 0055 discusses the Tesla-designed Cybertruck power tailgate system’s efficiency over existing systems traditionally used in the automotive industry as follows:
Power tailgates often require complex systems involving a plurality of expensive components (e.g., sensors, mechanical and computer components). Further, known power systems can be bulky which can limit the ability to efficiently and compactly package the system within the vehicle.

Part 0062 of the Cybertruck patent discusses that the implementation of this power system is not limited to just the tailgate of the vehicle. It can also be placed in other areas of the vehicle such as a storage box installed on the truck’s bed.
While the power system disclosed herein is described in the context of opening and closing a tailgate of a truck or SUV, the invention is not so limited. Embodiments of the system described herein can be employed in the place of any power system or linkage that is intended to open or close a hinged panel. For example, the system can be employed as part of a vehicle storage compartment mounted in the truck bed (e.g., a truck bed storage drawer or box) or as part of a cargo-hauling system dimensioned to fit within the bed of the truck. Of course, the system is not limited to use with trucks or SUVs and can be employed with any type of vehicle.

Reading through the lines of this patent document, it’s clear that Tesla does not want to limit the use of this power system to just the Cybertruck. If this system is successful in the Cybertruck production environment, Tesla is most likely to transition it to other vehicles as well — wherever the implementation is practical of course.
With the re-engineering and redesign of the Cybertruck power tailgate, Tesla has kept its tradition of innovation and Continuous Improvement/Deming Cycle that it practices at its factories and offices.
