Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) is starting to reshape itself in the human resources department at the company.
After an aggressive layoff policy removing 10% of its global workforce, the electric automotive and sustainable energy company has reportedly started rehiring people it had let go in the past few weeks.
Bonne Eggleston is one of the lucky few senior executives in the scenario who has been promoted to the next level. He was the Director of Cell Manufacturing at the company before becoming the Senior Director of Tesla 4680 this week.
The 4680 form factor cell is Tesla’s ingenious idea. It was first revealed at Battery Day 2020 aimed at creating a breakthrough technology in electric vehicle battery technology.
After the departure of Drew Baglino, who was in charge of the battery tech at Tesla, his junior Bonne Eggleston has now the opportunity to build upon the foundations of the 4680 cell. His main goals as the leader will be to scale production and decrease the cost of 4680 battery cells.
Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy summarized the company’s 4680 cell ramp-up and cost efficiency goals during the Q1 2024 earnings call. He said:
4680 production increased about uh 18-20% over from Q4 reaching greater than 1K a week for Cybertruck which is about 7 GWh per year.
We expect to stay ahead of the Cybertruck ramp with the cell production throughout Q2 as we ramp the third of four lines in Phase One while maintaining multiple weeks of cell inventory to make sure we’re ahead of the ramp.
Because our ramping costs continues to drop rapidly week over week driven by yield improvements throughout the lines and production volume increases. So, our goal, and we expect to do this, is to beat supplier cost of nickel-based cells by the end of the year.
Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Tesla has started rehiring some of the Supercharger Network staff back after the company fired the entire team from top to bottom.
According to the report, the global head of the Supercharger team Rebecca Tinucci has been restored to her position. However, after checking her LinkedIn profile, she still has her last job position as Ex-Tesla Charging Executive (Senior Director, Charging Infrastructure). Rebecca hasn’t updated her profile to reflect Bloomberg’s report even after more than 24 hours have passed.
Rebecca Tinucci’s last LinkedIn post was a farewell message for her colleagues at Tesla. She hasn’t posted as of this writing to announce her comeback at the company. Following is a part of her message:
You work at Tesla because you hope to have at least a small impact on our collective future – aspirationally, to leave the world better for our children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren – by accelerating the transition to sustainable energy. And that mission is too important to allow any distractions.
So, to my Tesla family who remains: Ignore the distractions, put your heads down, and do the difficult job of getting back to work. You have my unwavering support and I will proudly watch you carry the torch forward!
These rehirings have started after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on X (Twitter) that the company is going to invest $500M into the expansion of the Supercharger Network this year alone.
Musk’s announcement of the Supercharger infrastructure expansion came just days after he said that the Supercharger expansion would be slow.
According to Bloomberg, the EV automaker has also rehired Director of Charging, North America Max de Zegher. However, upon checking Max’s LinkedIn profile, he never showed that he had left Tesla. He has been working in this position for almost 2 years now.
Unexpected layoffs and rehirings will leave a bad impression on Tesla as a company where employees are basically driven by the mission, not the money. Elon Musk’s actions as a CEO with respect to his employees’ jobs and careers can easily be a de-motivating factor.
