Cybertruck production halts at Giga Texas due to the tunnel construction not a demand issue

Tesla (TSLA) paused the Cybertruck production at Giga Texas from December 3 to 5. Workers are told to stay home during these days and they will be paid in full for this period.

The mainstream media (MSM) interpret this temporary layoff as plummeted demand for the Cybertruck. On the other hand, Ford also halted its F-150 Lightning production from 18th November 2024 to 6th January 2025 (3 days vs around 7 weeks).

According a recent report and video footage from Tesla’s factory in Austin, Texas — the construction of the Cybertruck tunnel is also the cause of the production delay.

As you can see in aerial photos of Giga Texas taken yesterday, the number of Cybertruck units hasn’t increased at the outbound parking lot since production halt. While Boring Company employees are working on the Giga Texas tunnel exit.

According to the Giga Texas local observer Joe Tegtmeyer, the Cybertruck production halt has more to do with the construction of the tunnel rather than its low demand.

The tunnel opening seen in the picture above is the exit end. The other end of the Giga Texas tunnel opens inside the Cybertruck production area. Tesla had to halt Cybertruck production to complete the tunnel opening inside the factory.

This tunnel will be used as an extension of the Cybertruck production line to deliver the pickup trucks outside the factory and close to the outbound lot for deliveries.

Joe also reported that Tesla Model Y production hasn’t slowed down while the Cybertruck production paused only for 3 days. All Cybertruck production line workers are advised to return to their jobs tomorrow (Friday 6th December).

The pictures in Joe’s above tweet (X post) show that although Tesla has stopped the Cybertruck assembly lines, the automaker is still producing the Cybertruck Giga Castings. This suggests that Tesla hasn’t marginally dropped the Cybertruck production rate.

This is just a temporary production halt compared the Ford’s comparatively long-term halt of the F-150 Lightning EV pickup truck.

  1. It also appears finished cybertrucks will auto-pilot through this tunnel and park themselves into their assigned spot in the lot.
