At the Cybertruck delivery event in November 2023, Tesla surprised the world once more by offering a range-extending battery pack.
Interestingly, this battery pack extension wasn’t something to be installed in the floor or under the bed of the Cybertruck. The images of the range extender showed a large box-shaped battery packs occupying around half of the Cybertruck’s 6-foot bed.
The Cybertruck range extender battery packs sparked a debate inside the Tesla Community forums and social media. Another polarizer was thrown out in the EV market after the Cybertruck itself.
However, Tesla has now cancelled the plans of producing the Cybertruck range extender battery pack.
Tesla Cybertruck owners who had placed pre-orders for the range extender battery pack started getting cancellation emails last week. Tesla is refunding the entire amount to the Cybertruck owners with the cancellation of the range extender order.
Here’s the email’s content:
Update to Your Cybertruck Range Extender Order
Hi [Tesla Owner],
Thank you for being a Cybertruck owner.
We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck. As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full. The amount will be returned to the original payment method used for the transaction.
Thank you for your understanding.

Despite the polarizing views on the Cybertruck range-extending battery, Tesla actually received some orders for the expensive accessory. However, apparently, Tesla did not receive enough orders for the range extender. The low volume of orders is probably the reason behind the cancellation of the product.
Potential customers of the Cybertruck expected a range of 400 to 500 miles. However, the unorthodox all-electric Tesla pickup truck did not live upto the expectations of range numbers when it went into production.
The lower-than-expected range numbers pushed Tesla to create the idea of a range extender battery pack. The trade-off between range extension and compromised storage space in the bed wasn’t well-received by the customers.
The Cybertruck range-extender offered an additional 120-130 miles, depending on the variant. But as of the latest, Tesla has abandoned the idea of offering a range-extender.
The electric automaker recently introduced a Long Range RWD Cybertruck variant, which offers only 25 miles of extra range compared to the mid-tier AWD version but is $10k cheaper.
