In anticipation of the Robotaxi Service expansion, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle-maker Tesla (TSLA) applied for a permit top operate in Arizona.

Tesla applied for a permit to become a Transportation Network Company (TNC) with the state of Arizona on Thursday, 13th November.

Tesla was granted the permit to operate as a TNC in Arizona yesterday (Monday, 17th November), Tesla influencer Sawyer Merritt reported on X as he received a confirmation from the Arizona Department of Transportation (AZDOT).

Tesla has officially received approval from the Arizona Department of Transportation to launch its Robotaxi service on public roads in the state!

Although AZDOT’s email confirms that Tesla has been granted a permit as a TNC in Arizona, the PDF containing the list of TNCs hasn’t been updated to include Tesla.

In Austin, TX and the SF Bay Area, California, the automaker has registered as a TNC with the name “Tesla Robotaxi, LLC”. The automaker would register itself in other states with the same name.

Tesla recently announced that it would expand its Robotaxi Service to Nevada, Florida, and Arizona. Tesla is also hiring staff to enable its Robotaxi Service in selected cities of these states.

Tesla’s TNC permit in Arizona allows the company to operate with this single license across the entire state. Tesla does not need additional permits to operate its Robotaxi ride-hailing services in cities of Arizona.

A Model Y Robotaxi with special testing validation hardware was spotted in Pennsylvania earlier this week. However, there have been no reports of such testing in Arizona. Perhaps Tesla is going to perform these tests now that the permit has been acquired.
