Tesla (TSLA) has added a fifth variant of the Model Y electric SUV in the United States. This new trim is just one step above the base Model Y Standard RWD.
The new Tesla Model Y Standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is priced at $41,990. For just $2,000 extra, you get an AWD drivetrain and significantly better acceleration.
The base Model Y RWD goes from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, while the newly introduced RWD version does that in just 4.6 seconds. However, you have to compromise on the range a bit (detailed specs comparison table below).
The Tesla Model Y RWD base variant boasts an EPA estimated range of 321 miles. The new Model Y AWD comes with 294 miles of range. For increased traction, better handling, more torque, and dual-motors, the loss of 27 miles of range seems a good bargain.
Last year, Tesla separated the Model Y lineup into two categories: Standard and Premium. The ‘Standard’ version was stripped down by features and had a downgraded interior and exterior design.
Tesla only launched the Standard Model Y in RWD powertrain in October last year. Now, the automaker included an AWD variant. This decision must have come after customer feedback and market research.
The interior, exterior, and features of both Standard AWD and RWD Model Y variants are the same. However, the powertrain what makes them different. There is one minor difference as well: the Model Y RWD charges up to 160 miles, and AWD charges up to 152 miles in 15 minutes using a Supercharger.
