The United States’ 250th anniversary might bring something special from Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) as well.
Strong rumors and unconfirmed reports suggest that the US-based automaker is going to launch the anticipated Model Y L electric SUV in North America.
According to the information that a Tesla customer received from the Tesla staff, Tesla is planning to offer the Model Y L just before Independence Day. Reddit user @Sheikybabybaba posted a screenshot of his messaging exchange with a Tesla representative online.
In another report by NotATeslaApp, Tesla is preparing its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, to produce the 6-seat, larger, more spacious version of the Model Y, officially called the Model Y L.
Model Y L in North America
Last year, the Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, said that the Model Y L variant might never be launched in the US. However, he also said that if the production starts, it won’t be before the end of 2026.
Offering it just before the 250th anniversary is going to give Tesla an emotional advantage in sales. The launch here refers to the ability to place a Model Y L order from North America (the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico).
Since Tesla is rumored to be preparing Giga Texas for Model Y L production, the delivery dates will most probably be pushed to the end of the year, around Christmas.

Tesla launched the new Model Y L variant in China last year. The 6-seat configuration and extra interior space of this new Model Y variant attracted a lot of attention globally, especially in the United States.
At first, Tesla did not have the intention to bring the Model Y L to North America, but after studying the interest of its potential customer base, the automaker must have decided to launch it here.
Tesla introduced the longer wheelbase Model Y L in China because of extended families. A portion of the Eastern society still lives and travels with three generations (grandparents, parents, and children).
However, even in the Western world, Model Y L received high interest from families with more than two children or customers looking for more space for trips with friends.
In the absence of the Model X SUV, the Model Y L makes much more sense than before. Some of the potential Model X customers will transition to the new Model Y L.
Compared to the normal Model Y, the Model Y L’s length is 179 mm (7 inches), and its wheelbase is 150 mm (~6 inches) longer. These altered specs allow the Model Y L to have more cabin space compared to the usual variant.
Tesla Model Y L has an additional overall height of 44 mm (~1.6 inches) compared to the normal Model Y, which adds head space for the third row.

Expected Price
In China, the Tesla Model Y L variant is classified and priced between the Premium AWD below it and the Model Y Performance above it. Model Y L costs 339,000 Yuan (~$50,000) in China, which is around $4,000 above the Premium AWD’s price of 313,500 Yuan (~$46,300).
In the United States, the Premium AWD Model Y is priced at $49,990, and the Performance version costs $57,990. Tesla has to smartly price the new Model Y L variant between these two.
If Tesla keeps the current pricing structure valid for existing models, the new Model Y L can cost anywhere between $53,000 to $54,000.
However, my gut feeling and years of experience covering Tesla affairs tell me that the automaker will slightly increase the price of the Model Y Performance to comfortably price the Model Y L at or above $55,000 in the US.
