Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology doesn’t just get better with every software update; the integrated AI also demonstrates amazing capabilities from time to time.

A Tesla owner and FSD user experienced one such unique scenario. As he was driving his Tesla on FSD v14.2.2.5, the car recognized that a police vehicle was stopped ahead.

Ahead of the police car, there was a large fallen tree branch. For the safety of the road users, the police officer was signaling using the STOP hand gesture. Tesla FSD v14 recognized the officer’s hand gesture and stopped at a safe distance.

Interestingly, FSD stayed put until the police officer signaled a go. After getting a positive hand gesture, Tesla FSD pulled to the left to bypass the cop’s car and get back to its lane.

The Tesla owner described this experience as:

FSD recognizes officers hand signals.

FSD 14.2.2.5 stopped for a police officer who was assisting in a fallen branch and directing traffic.

FSD waited until the officer waved me on to go, the car recognized his hand signal.

FSD v14.3.2 is the latest version of Tesla’s AI-vision-based self-driving technology. However, the captured dashcam video is from a previous version of FSD, i.e., v14.2.2.5, which is also the one available in Europe.

This is an interesting safety-related scenario. AI computer vision flawlessly recognizing and following hand gesture commands by security personnel is a big leap in self-driving technology, currently only achieved by Tesla.

Tesla had introduced hand gesture recognition in the FSD v14.2 update last year. In a multi-layered scenario like red lights and hand gestures, Tesla FSD showed a calm and intelligent human-like behavior in a previous video.

The AI & tech-based automaker trains its Full Self-Driving technology on video and other data received from its global fleet of millions of vehicles. Tesla’s neural nets carefully select the most important data and train FSD to handle the most difficult or rare situations, like the one shown in the following video.

Stay tuned for tons of interesting Tesla FSD videos and content as the technology develops further.
