The Technoking and CEO of Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) shared an update regarding the rollout of the next version of the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software yesterday.

Musk took to his social media platform and posted the initial release schedule of FSD v12.4.2. “Build moves to internal testing tomorrow,” he said. This means it will start rolling out to Tesla employees today.

Tesla has a dedicated team that constantly performs testing and validation of the FSD system. This team is not just limited to the US. According to Elon Musk, the Tesla FSD internal testers are spread globally — he revealed this during his FSD 12 test drive live-stream demonstration last year.

Besides revealing the FSD (Supervised) v12.4.2 internal rollout information, Musk also gave a few tidbits about the upcoming release. “12.4.2 is much smoother. Challenge is keeping safety high, while increasing ride comfort,” Elon Musk outlined the goals of the FSD 12.4.2 version.

Tesla is set out to make check for safety regressions in the upcoming FSD v12.4.2 some of which were identified in v12.4.1 in the Chuck Cook UPL test. Tesla released the previous version (12.4.1) to a very limited number of external beta testers, so there isn’t a lot of public data available for review.

FSD (Supervised) tester and YouTuber AI DRIVR reported issues with lane changes in FSD v12.4.1 (watch below). These problems are expected to be ironed out in the next v12.4.2 update.

Elon Musk also confirmed that if there are no safety regressions necessary, the FSD v12.4.2 update will be rolled out to Tesla owners on the weekend (Jun 28 -30). “We just need to confirm there are no safety regressions,” he replied to an external FSD tester in an X post.

Tesla is most probably not going to wide-release FSD v12.4.2 just like the previous version. The automaker’s AI team is going to very closely monitor the issues in this version and release it to testers cautiously. The big reason for this limited release is the massive number of changes from v12.3.3, as Musk previously noted.

Tesla engineers are taking every caution before releasing these updates to the masses. As observed in the AI DRIVR’s video above, FSD v12.4.1 made frequent lane changes on his test route. These lane changes sometimes were unnecessary.

Interestingly, AI DRIVR was the only one to report this frequent lane change issue in v12.4.1. It might possibly be isolated to his car but it’s still an issue.

Hope 12.4.2 does not face these issues and we see better reviews of the upcoming FSD version. Stay tuned for the updates.
