Tesla’s flagship sedan Model S Plaid has set a world record for a production electric car at Nürburgring. Tesla Model S Plaid completed the 20.6 km lap in 7:30.909 minutes. The entire 20.8 km Nordschleife lap was finished in 7:35.579 minutes (source: Nürburgring official website).

Both Tesla and Nürburgring’s official YouTube channels released the lap completion video recorded via the cabin camera (below). The record-setting Plaid Model S was driven by Andreas Simonsen, a Swedish auto racing driver.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this with pride “Tesla Model S Plaid just set official world speed record for a production electric car at Nurburgring. Completely unmodified, directly from factory,” he posted on Twitter with the following timeslip.

Setting up a record at a track as difficult as the ‘ring with a totally stock car is an amazing feat achieved by the Silicon Valley-based automaker. What’s even more interesting is that the car was driven using the Yoke steering. Tesla has successfully debunked the controversy around Yoke’s handling performance.

When Randy Pobst drove the Tesla Model S Plaid at Pikes Peak, he replaced the Yoke with a regular old round steering wheel. However, Musk has hinted that a modified Model S Plaid will be next to set another record at Nürburgring.

Next will be modified Plaid with added aero surfaces, carbon brakes & track tires (all things that can be done without Tesla being in the loop).

Tesla has been trying to conquer Nürburgring since 2019 when the automaker built the early Tri-Motor prototypes of the Model S Plaid. At the end of last month, Tesla even crashed a Plaid Model S car during a test lap. But Musk and his team never lost hope and the new production EV lap record was born.
