Two new variants of the 2022 Tesla Model Y appear on the EPA website but not in the Tesla configurator

Two new variants of the Model Y can now be seen on the website of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Surprisingly, Tesla has not put these new variants on sale on their website or offline stores yet.

One of these variants mentioned on the EPA website is the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Model Y.

Another one is the Model Y AWD which has a lower amount of range compared to the current Model Y AWD Long Range variant.

At the start of last year, Tesla did put a Model Y RWD on sale but the automaker discontinued it within less than a month. This was also referred to as the Model Y Standard Range version — the cheapest Model Y available for a very brief period of time.

It has been more than a year that some potential Tesla Model Y customers are waiting for the Standard Range RWD variant but without any official confirmation from Tesla, Inc. (TSLA).

Now once again, the same variant with the same range of 244 miles (~393 km) has popped up on the website of EPA.

With the price huge price increment earlier this week, Tesla Model Y now starts at $62,990. This Long Range AWD variant has a 318 miles (~512 km) range.

This is perhaps the best time to introduce a cheaper Model Y and we can see a hint by searching for Model Y on the EPA website.

But looks like Tesla is all prepared to introduce not one but two cheaper options of the Model Y as another AWD variant with a range of 279 miles (449 km) is also present in the new EPA fuel economy database.

But the automaker or its CEO Elon Musk have not yet uttered an official word if any of these variants coming anytime sooner or later.

Let’s look at the screenshot of the fuel economy comparison of all 4 variants on the EPA website (remember only two are available for sale by Tesla at the moment, Model Y Long Range AWD and Model Y Performance).

Interestingly, with a combined 129 MPGe (miles per gallon-equivalent), the 2022 Tesla Model Y RWD mentioned on the EPA fuel economy rating page is the most efficient of all the trims.

Here are the range and efficiency numbers for all the 2022 Tesla Model Y variants present on the EPA website.

If these variants are present on the website of the EPA, there’s a strong chance that Tesla will be making them available to the public but the timeline cannot be easily predicted.
