Tesla Model S Plaid faces a 1,400 hp Nissan GTR and a 1,000 hp Ford Mustang in a drag racing battle

It is becoming more and more difficult to find a worthy opponent of a Tesla Model S Plaid on a dragstrip these days. “We can’t really anyone to race us, that’s the problem,” DragTimes YouTube channel host Brooks Weisblat said before at the Houston Raceway Park dragstrip before the drag racing competition started.

In a previous drag race with an 850 hp Nissan GTR, the video audience commented that the car was not properly launched and the driver did not handle the race the way it should have been. So, DragTimes organized another race with 2 Nissan GTRs, an 850 hp, and the other one with 1,400 horsepower to the wheels (WHP).

Another challenger in this drag racing battle is a 1,000 HP Twin Turbo Ford Mustang — interesting. As a reminder, Tesla Model S Plaid has 1,020 hp of power with around 1,050 lb-ft of electric torque delivered to the wheels almost instantaneously.

1st Race: 850 WHP Nissan GTR vs. Tesla Model S Plaid

The GTR had a good launch this time but Plaid caught up quickly and became the winner of this race. Nissan GTR completed the quarter-mile in 10.599 seconds @139.82 mph. While Tesla Model S Plaid did it in 9.427 seconds @149.61 mph.

2nd Race: 1,400 hp Nissan GTR vs. Tesla Model S Plaid

This 1,400 hp Nissan GTR is a highly customized and highly tuned street racer that challenged the quickest mass-production car Tesla Model S Plaid which has a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds.

Despite Plaid’s great launch and initial lead, this Nissan GTR took the lead and won the race with a big margin. After the 1,200 hp Dodge Demon, this GTR is the 2nd ICE opponent to have beaten the Model S Plaid at the dragstrip.

Nissan GTR finished the 1/4-mile in just 8.1 seconds @171.47 mph — wow — and the consistent Tesla Model S Plaid did it in 9.314 seconds (speed reading had a bug for the Plaid). The GTR had to deploy a parachute to decelerate and come to a complete stop.

3rd Race: 1,000 hp Twin-Turbo Ford Mustang vs. Tesla Model S Plaid

In horsepower terms, both of these opponents are quite comparable machines, Mustang with 1,000 hp and Plaid with 1,020 hp. But with instant electric torque, the absence of multiple gears (this Mustang has a 10-speed automatic transmission vs. Plaid’s single gear), and a consistent buildup of acceleration, the Ford Mustang had no chance against the Tesla Model S Plaid.

In this attempt, Ford Mustang did the quarter-mile in 10.562 seconds @137.75 mph while Model S Plaid again showed its consistency by doing it in 9.328 seconds @149.55 mph.

Verdict

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced last month that the next-gen Tesla Roadster production will start next year (2023). This electric sports car by Tesla will take care of the opponents like this highly-customized Nissan GTR and the Dodge Demon.

Let’s watch these entertaining races as we witness how far Tesla has brought the electric vehicle technology in a short span of time considering old automotive companies being on the face of the planet for more than 100 years.
