Elon Musk temporarily makes his Twitter account private to test its reach, reveals content monetization plans for creators

The owner of social media giant Twitter Elon Musk has put his account on the platform in Private mode. He did this to test how much the reach of his tweets gets affected.

“Made my account private until tomorrow morning to test whether you see my private tweets more than my public ones,” Elon Musk tweeted last night.

Although he said that the account would remain private until morning, it is still in private mode as of this writing. And it’s almost afternoon in Austin, Texas if we consider it his current location. Perhaps, he was referring to the morning of 2nd February when he will turn the account back to “public’.

Until Musk’s account is “private”, only his followers will be able to view and reply to his tweets and search engines will not be able to index his tweets.

One downside is that all of Musk’s tweets embedded across the web in blogs and news websites are not going to render on pages until he puts his account back to the default public status.

Actually, this was how I found that there was something wrong with Musk’s tweets when I saw one of my recent articles on the Tesla Model S wading test. One of his tweets on this article disappeared, so I immediately went to Twitter to check, and Musk’s account was made private.

Elon Musk has been hyperactive on Twitter since he took over the social media company’s office back in October last year. He has been playing with new features and tweaks to Twitter at the same pace he is used to at his other companies such as Tesla and SpaceX.

Turning his account private is also part of his research on how the algorithms of Twitter respond to such an act with a large account such as Musk’s with 127.7 million followers.

On the other hand, Elon Musk revealed Twitter’s plans to compensate creators of interesting threads, articles, and content on the platform. Twitter is considering sharing ad revenue with content creators.

It is interesting that authors and publishers will be able to publish directly on Twitter and get paid for their work. He gave the following details of content monetization for creators on Twitter in his tweets which are currently private:

You’re welcome. Axed them yesterday to focus on enabling writers to add essays as attachments to tweets. Combined with improvements to creator subscriptions (fka superfollow), you will be able to publish directly on Twitter & get paid for it. Beta version launching next week.
