Watch if the Cybertruck glass shatters in the steel ball test this time

Tesla Cybertruck didn’t only garner its popularity on a global scale just because of its angular design. The icing on the cake was the shattered window glass as it broke during a live demonstration of strength at the Cybertruck unveiling event in November 2019.

The mishap triggered headlines internationally, criticizing Elon Musk’s bold claims that the Cybertruck glass is virtually unbreakable. The person who threw the steel ball at the Cybertruck window after Elon Musk’s permission was none other than the one who designed it, Franz von Holzhausen, the automaker’s Chief Designer.

However, Elon Musk later came forward with fair enough explanations of how the Cybertruck glass shattered with the steel ball hit. If you ask me, the steel ball used in this test was too large and heavy as well.

Video: Cybertruck owners find the Broken Window Glass Easter Egg on the truck’s screen UI.

As we can witness in the video above, Tesla has even built an easter egg on the Cybertruck’s screen in the context of the shattered windows from the unveiling.

If you tap the on-screen windows of the Cybertruck visualization graphic, it will show the damaged windows as the original event. This effect lasts for a few seconds before the windows become normal again.

Now, since the production version of Founders Series Cybertrucks are out in the hands of customers, they are going through various tests by the end users.

YouTube channel TechRax thought this was the right time to repeat the Cybertruck glass durability test. For this test, TechRax also used a steel ball but it’s smaller and lighter compared to the original ball Franz threw at the Cybertruck in 2019.

However, at the Cybertruck Delivery Event on 30th November 2023, Tesla did not use a steel ball for the glass window durability test. Instead, the automaker used a Baseball ball for the test. A Baseball ball weighs between 142 to 149 grams and is not hard like metal, so, this time, the test was not that exciting and it didn’t put a scratch on the Cybertruck window (of course).

TechRax team also threw a baseball at the Cybertruck window two times, and it had the same effect, a no-brainer for the tough electric pickup truck.

Now came the exciting part, throwing a steel ball on the Cybertruck window, guess what? It didn’t shatter the glass as well. TechRax threw the steel ball on the Cybertruck’s window three times and the glass did not break.

The glass used in Tesla car windows and glass roofs is built by the automaker in-house and goes under constant research and development at the company’s labs spread across its global factories.
