NHTSA issued a recall of more than 27,000 Cybertrucks last week. This massive recall sent chills across the Tesla customer and enthusiast community.
Mainstream media (MSM) and Tesla (TSLA) bears of the Wallstreet translated and spread this news as a big issue with the automaker and the Cybertruck manufacturing. In reality, this isn’t the case.
Last week, NHTSA safety recall # 24V-718 marked more than 27k Tesla Cybertrucks with a “software logic for low voltage hardware” issue that results in a delayed video feed of the rearview camera while reversing the vehicle.
As I mentioned above, this is clearly a software calibration issue, not physical fault in rearview cameras. All it takes to fix the problem is an over-the-air (OTA) software update by Tesla, Inc. (TSLA).
The rearview camera lag issue in Cybertrucks was first identified by Tesla internally on 12th September 2024. The automaker immediately started working on a fix and Cybertrucks produced on or after 18th September 2024 are free of this defect.
According to the official Cybertruck recall # 24V-718 document, Tesla has identified 45 warranty claims and four field reports that are possibly related to this specific issue.
Tesla Cybertrucks already in the hands of customers received the fix with the software release version 2024.32.5.2 or a later version. Interestingly, Tesla started deploying this update on 19th September to fix the issue.
The fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) campaign against Tesla started only after the Cybertruck rearview camera recall was made public on the NHTSA website last week.
The disinformation and FUD campaign spread like wildfire. Even Reuters covered the story with a headline “Tesla recalls more than 27,000 Cybertrucks to fix rear-view camera delay”. This news article was posted on 3rd October.
The headline doesn’t give information that it’s just a software update fix. People not acquainted with Tesla vehicles will take it as if it was a massive physical recall where owners have to take their trucks into a service center to be fixed — which is not the case for most of the Tesla recalls.
To diffuse the misinformation, Elon Musk’s mother Maye Musk used her social media presence. She posted her thoughts on X (Twitter) including the Reurters article screenshot. She wrote:
One vehicle regulation that needs to change is, a software update is not a recall.
@Reuters knows that, but they also know their readers are stupid, so they can continue to tell lies with their Tesla headlines. Actually, their last paragraph usually does mention a software update, but they know their readers don’t read that far.
Cybertruck Production Numbers
As we posted in our Tesla (TSLA) Q3 2024 vehicle delivery report earlier this week, the electric vehicle automaker does not report Cybertruck production numbers separately.
However, with the NHTSA recall FMVSS 111 24V-718, Tesla accidentally shared Cybertruck production numbers with the world.
Between 13th November 2023 (start of Cybertruck production and deliveries) and 14th September 2024, Tesla (TSLA) produced 27,185 Cybertruck units. This is an 11-month production period.
This means that Tesla produced 27,185 Cybertrucks in the last 11 months. On average, the automaker produced 2,471 Cybertruck units per month which translates to an average weekly production of around 618 units.
These are interesting numbers which suggest that Tesla has either already achieved a production rate of 1,000 Cybertruck units per week or soon will achieve this production ramp from Giga Texas alone.
