Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) is planning to expand the Gigafactory Texas general assembly area by 500,000 square feet. This information was revealed in a permit filed by the automaker with the City of Austin, Texas.

The public records from the Austin Build + Connect (ABC) website show that Tesla has applied for an expansion of Giga Texas by 500K sqft. The online document also shows that Tesla has already chosen a plumbing contractor for this project named Dynamic Systems, Inc.

On the other hand, hundreds of Tesla Model Ys have been seen leaving Giga Austin for deliveries to stores and then customers. According to the sources of local observer Joe Tegtmeyer, Tesla has ramped up Giga Texas’ production to 100 Model Y electric SUVs per day (drone video below).

The public records show that this application for the Giga Texas expansion was just filed yesterday (29th June 2022). This permit application (2022-097749 PP) shows that Tesla wants to set up new assembly lines at Giga Texas in the near future. Tesla will need these new assembly lines as the existing ones will be fully occupied in all shifts as production quickly ramps up at the factory.

“All above-ground piping and underground plumbing, GA (General Assembly) 2 and 3 expansion, 500,000 square foot,” says the description of the permit application.

Tweet: Expected expansion area marked. The addition of 500,000 sq ft roughly adds 11.5% to the Giga Texas footprint which currently stands at around 4.33 million sq ft (excluding this current permit application).

There are conflicting reports coming out of Giga Texas about the daily production ramp-up, according to Electrek, production is currently somewhere between 2,000 to 5,000 Model Y units per week. But Joe Tegtmeyer estimates it has crossed 100 units per day which makes it around 700 Model Ys per week.

However, there has been no official confirmation by Tesla about the number of units being produced at Giga Texas as of now. Tesla might officially confirm the numbers via a tweet just like the automaker did last week for Giga Berlin production or it will be revealed at the Q2 2022 Earnings Call.

Many areas of and around the existing Model Y production building are still under construction. The new 500,000-square-foot expansion is most probably a preparation to tackle the production load that Tesla foresees in the near-term future.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk just recently said in an online interview that Giga Texas and Giga Berlin are “gigantic money furnaces,” he further added that “Berlin and Austin are losing billions of dollars right now.” But just yesterday, Tesla surprised the world by applying for an expansion permit at Giga Texas.

Tesla also plans to start Cybertruck production at Giga Texas next year, more expansions and factory construction are to be witnessed in the coming months and years. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
