Here’s why Tesla launched the cheaper Model S and Model X Standard Range variant

Tesla has introduced a new Standard Range variant for its higher-end luxury sedan Model X and luxury SUV Model X. This new variant comes with a lower range and a cheaper price tag.

Tesla launched the new Standard Range Model S/X variant for $10,000 less than the previous starting price of these vehicles. Now a base Tesla Model S starts at $78,490 and a base Model X starts at $88,490 with a ‘Standard Range’ suffix.

The previous base variants are now aligned in the middle of the lineup and are simply called ‘Model S’ and ‘Model X’ by Tesla. The price and range of these median variants stay the same as previous, just that Tesla now has a cheaper version of both of these vehicles. The new Standard Range Model S/X are Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive.

The last time Tesla changed the prices of Model S/X was in May. Since then, it has been a relatively long pause compared to the constant price shuffles since 2022.

So, why did Tesla launch the newer much affordable versions of the Model S and Model X? Because, the sale of these vehicles has been low for a long time, especially compared to the smaller Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) sold only 19,225 units of Model S and X combined in Q2 2023. This is slightly above 4% of the total vehicle deliveries by Tesla in the last quarter.

We will have to wait at least the rest of the year to witness the result of Tesla’s introduction of the cheaper Model S/X as the automaker made this decision in the middle of Q3 2023. China has been a good market for the Model X but with the launch of Model Y, its sales are probably struggling there as well.

Let’s go over the specifications and details of the new Model S/X Standard Range below.

While Tesla has reduced the price of the Model S by adding the Standard Range variant, the range and performance figures have also dropped with it.

Model S Standard Range has an EPA estimated range of 320 miles (515 km) down 85 miles (137 km) from the Model S’ 405 miles (652 km).

Acceleration also drops by 0.6 seconds as soon as you choose the Model S Standard Range. It has a 0-60 mph figure of 3.7 seconds while the Model S comes with a 3.1 sec time. The top-end Tesla Model S Plaid variant comes with a 0-60 of 1.99 seconds.

Now a Tesla Model X Standard Range can be bought for $88,490 — perhaps the lowest price point of a Tesla Model X in recent years.

Model X Standard Range has an EPA estimated range of 269 miles (433 km) compared to the Model X’s 348 miles (560 km). This variant comes with a 4.4 sec 0-60 mph acceleration time which is 0.6 sec lower compared to the Model X (mid-tier) which has a 3.8 sec on the spec sheet.

Only range and acceleration figures drop when buying a Standard Range Model S or X. The rest of the stock options such as wheels, paint, interior, and exterior remain the same as the Model S/X (mid-priced variant).
