Tesla (TSLA) started rolling out the much-awaited Cybertruck Full Self-Driving (FSD) update just before the end of September as promised in its software release roadmap.
Tesla Cybertruck FSD update version 12.5.5 was first given to a small number of owners belonging to the influencer and YouTuber spectrum. However, the automaker quickly expanded the rollout to normal Cybertruck owners the very next day.
In the meantime, the first set of Cybertruck owners have tested FSD on their trucks. Running a large boxy designed electric pickup truck on Autopilot/FSD is far more interesting and challenging compared to a car like Model 3 or Model Y. This is why Tesla released FSD for Cybertruck considerably later than other vehicles.
Looking at the software tracking data from TeslaFi.com and TeslaScope.com, the automaker sent out two big waves of Cybertruck FSD since Monday. Currently, more than 230 Cybertrucks have received the FSD v12.5.5 update on both of these websites combined.
Chuck Cook Testing Cybertruck FSD
Popular FSD beta tester from the original early access group Chuck Cook was one of the first few owners to get the FSD v12.5.5 update on his truck. Luckily, he was not out of town for his job this time, so we got to see some testing videos from him early on.
Unprotected Left Turn (UPL) Testing
Chuck tested Cybertruck FSD in a variety of scenarios but his specialty is unprotected left turns (UPLs). He lives in Jacksonville, Florida and there is a very difficult UPL near his home which has been named Chuck Cook-style UPL by Tesla.
Before Chuck received the FSD v12.5.5 update on his Cybertruck, he spotted Tesla employees testing the Cybertruck on this UPL for days. This indicates how serious of a learning curve these types of UPLs are for Tesla Autopilot/FSD.
As we saw in the video above, Tesla Cybertruck being a massive vehicle, took the UPL so nicely that it made it look easy for Autopilot. Chuck was a bit worried about how it would behave in the median but the Cybertruck took a question mark turn to gain enough space and take the correct lane.
Cybertruck waited calmly at the intersection as the other truck was parked in the median. When the truck in front took its left turn (at Roosevelt Blvd, JAX), the Cybertruck also started moving. This UPL by the Cybertruck running on FSD 12.5.5 looked very natural and human-like when seen in the aerial camera (bottom-left in the video above).
Chuck just uploaded another UPL testing video as I was writing this article. He tested it on the same unprotected left turn and the Cybertruck seems to have mastered the art of a question mark “?” turn. Tesla trained the neural net well enough considering the size of the Cybertruck.
There was one safety disengagement from this morning’s test when Chuck had to intervene and press the brakes as a semi-truck went pass too close to the median.
Cybertruck FSD: End to End on Highway
Cybertruck is the first Tesla vehicle to get the End-to-End on Highway AI neural net decision-making. This highway stack is new in publicly-owned Teslas, so, as the Tesla neural net gets more and more highway data back from the vehicles, the decision-making will get better with each over-the-air (OTA) software update.
Early access, Tesla Cybertruck owners tested the End-to-End on Highway on their Cybertrucks and had a mixed review of the new system. Before this update, Tesla FSD used to take highway driiving decisions based on programming logic, so it’s a new transition.
Only Cybertrucks have this AI feature right now, other Teslas will get it as they receive the FSD v12.5.5 or a later OTA update.
