Tesla issues FSD trial users an extension to experience the upcoming FSD v13

On Friday, Tesla (TSLA) started sending out its FSD trial users an exciting email announcing that their free 30-day period to evaluate the system had been extended further.

Tesla extended the FSD trial by around a week. Depending on the date when the users activated their trials during last week, Tesla owners are getting different expiry dates.

FSD trial users reported the extension emails they received from Tesla on Reddit and other social media platforms. Some users now have an FSD trial period expiry date of 23rd November and some have on the 24th — depending on when they originally activated the feature.

“Your 30-day complimentary trial of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) for your Model 3 [Y, S, X] has been extended”.

Tesla Redditors and enthusiasts believe that the automaker has extended the FSD trial period to allow a large number of Tesla owners to experience the upcoming FSD v13. Tesla claims to have achieved exponential improvements in autonomy with Full Self-Driving version 13.

Interestingly, all the Robotaxi prototypes and Tesla-owned Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at the “We, Robot” event were using FSD v13 to navigate the streets of the Warner Brothers Studios Burbank.

During the recent Q3 2024 TSLA earnings call, the company’s head of AI Ashok Elluswamy stated that FSD v13 will be 1000 times better compared to what the system delivered in Jan 2024, he said:

“We have already made a 100x improvement with 12.5 from the start of this year. Then with V13, we expect to be 1000X from the beginning of January”.

While Elon Musk said about FSD v13:

“V13 is going out soon — we expect to see roughly a five or six fold improvement in miles between interventions compared to 12.5”.

In the original FSD v12.5 and v13 feature deployment roadmap put out by Tesla, FSD v13 is planned to be rolled out in October. As of this writing, Tesla hasn’t released FSD v13. However, Tesla might release it at the end of month as it did for Cybertruck FSD last month.

The FSD trial period extension suggests that Tesla plans to give trial users ample time to test-drive FSD v13 as it’s not yet released to non-employees. The is most probably expecting to convert a good percentage of FSD v13 trial users to either monthly subscribers for $99/month or sell them the entire package for a lifetime fee of $8,000.

Tesla might also increase the price of Full Self-Driving Capability on its vehicles, depending on the success of FSD v13.

In the first wave of FSD trial rollout, Tesla customers received the FSD v12.3.3 update. This update covered the entire fleet including the legacy HW2.5 cars as well.

In the following days, Tesla upgraded HW3 and HW4 cars with FSD v12.5.4.1 along with the Actually Smart Summon (ASS) feature.
