Tesla starts offering Acceleration Boost for the Model 3 Highland Long Range variant

Tesla (TSLA) hasn’t forgotten about its new Tesla Model 3 in the rush of Robotaxi, Optimus humanoid robot, and the Cybertruck.

In a recent new development, Tesla has started offering a paid software update for its design-refreshed Model 3 Highland. This new update is named “Acceleration Boost” by the automaker.

The Acceleration Boost update reduces the 0-60 mph or 0-100 km/h acceleration time by 0.6 seconds. This update is only available for the new Model 3 Long Range AWD variant, which has a factory 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds.

So, this was the good news, the bad news is that the Model 3 Acceleration Boost update is currently only availble for specific regions like China and Australia. Tesla hasn’t started the rollout of this paid update for its North American customers.

Since most of the reports of getting the Model 3 Acceleration Boost offer are from Australia as of now, the price and acceleration unit (km/h) is relevant to the region which follows the European standards.

Tesla is offering the Model 3 Acceleration Boost update for 3,000 Australian Dollars (AU$). Adjusted for the exchange rate, the price of the package is equivalent to 2,000 USD.

Whenever Tesla unlocks the Acceleration Boost package in the United States, the price will be $2,000 because the automaker offered the Model Y Accelationa Boost for the same price back in 2020.

Model 3 Acceleration Figures: mph vs km/h

Tesla quotes acceleration figures in different units for different countries. Since the United States uses the imperial system for measurement units, the vehicle acceleration numbers are shown in miles-per-hour.

The rest of the world mostly uses the metric system for measurement units. So, in this case, Tesla is showing 0-100 km/h for the acceleration numbers on its Australian Model 3 car configurator.

The fact to remember here is that 100 km/h equals 62.1 mph, not 60 mph. This creates a difference in the acceleration figures of the US Tesla vehicles and the ones available in the rest of the world.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range goes from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds while it achieves 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The Acceleration Boost reduces these numbers by 0.6 seconds.

So, after installing the Acceleration Boost over-the-air (OTA) software update, a Model 3 Long Range AWD will go from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The difference of the base 0.2 seconds will remain after installing the update in the US and other regions using metric units.

Model 3 Owner Reactions

Studying the reactions of Tesla Model 3 Long Range owners on Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) and X (Twitter), I saw mixed reactions to the Acceleration Boost update.

Some owners see this update as an expensive upgrade with no practical usage. More enthusiastic owners who like to push the accelerator pedal to the metal see this update as a good option to speed up their cars in a straight line.

Tesla owners in the past have installed the Acceleration Boost update on their Model Y electric SUVs and tested them in drag racing and saw good results on the dragstrips.

The Model 3 Long Range AWD Acceleration Boost upgrade should start to roll out in the US and Canada in the coming weeks.
