Tesla FSD v13 performs unexpectedly well on unmarked Chinese roads (video)

China is the first country outside North America to get the Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) software regularized for city streets. The automaker started rolling out FSD to its Chinese customers at the end of last month.

Unlike the US or Canada, FSD users in China directly got the latest version of FSD i.e. FSD v13 (2024.45.32.12). Most of the video data used to train the Tesla Vision AI Neural Net was gathered from North America.

However, despite a low amount of data from China, Tesla FSD has been performing very well on the country’s roads. Chinese Tesla owners have been testing Full Self-Driving v13 since its launch there and most of the video clips are very impressive from day one.

In one of the latest FSD tests in China, a Tesla owner put his car in Autopilot mode and gave it a challenging unmarked road. This road was not only without any lane markings but very narrow as well.

This is one of the FSD videos (watch below) that are worth watching every minute. The intensity and difficulty of the scenarios make it very interesting.

As it was the first time FSD beta testers in China put Tesla’s self-driving technology to such a challenge in this region, they themselves were guessing each moment what will happen next.

During the entire FSD run in this video, this narrow street has large compound walls built on both sides of the road. The environment is fairly different compared to the US or Canada.

Scenario: Three-Wheelers on a Narrow Road

In the screenshot above, we can see that a three-wheeler Chingqi (ching-chee) bike approaches from the front. There are vehicles parked on the right side of the road and there is only one vehicle that can pass through.

Meanwhile, Tesla FSD was figuring out the situation. It had come to a complete stop when another bike entered the road from ahead. However, FSD v13 showed patience, and as the bikes moved back to give way, the Tesla vehicle slowly moved ahead.

However, FSD’s response was slow compared to a human driver as one of the bikers pointed at the Tesla driver multiple times ‘can’t you see, hurry up [gesture]’.

Although FSD finally handled this situation and moved forward, it hesitated and looked a bit scared compared to an experienced human driver.

The good thing by this YouTube channel ‘Tesla FSD in China’ is that they have put some decently-translated subtitles from Chinese to English as they discuss the scenarios during the video.

Scenario: Giving Way to Oncoming Car

FSD stopped behind a parked turck on this narrow unmarked road to give way to the oncoming car. As soon as the car passed-by, FSD accelerated with a perfect turn towards left and got back on its path.

Another impressive FSD China moment came in the video a few minutes after the three-wheeler situation. Let’s watch how it did it and the rest of the journey in the following video.

Tesla is constantly improving its FSD system and with the ongoing OTA software updates, it will be improving gradually and then exponentially — stay tuned for exciting future updates.
