Autopilot FSD Beta will get ‘absurdly’ good, says Elon Musk (V7 test videos)

Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped his input on the upcoming developments in the Full Self-Driving Beta experience. “It will get absurdly good,” he said while responding to a latest FSD Beta tester’s video on Twitter.

The definition of Absurd or Absurdity is:

An absurdity is a thing that is extremely unreasonable, so as to be foolish or not taken seriously.

He further said that the “Autopilot/FSD engineering is awesome”. Being a video game lover, and apparently a fan of Sony’s Cyberpunk 2077, he said:

There’s some great AI out there, but can it self-drive while playing Cyberpunk …?

This is probably a hint that in the future, Tesla Autopilot will be Level 5 self-driving software and it will actually be possible to play video games on giant Tesla center touchscreens while the car drives itself.

The most recent version of FSD Beta is V7 (2020.48.10.1), the last time we covered the then-popular V5. Tesla deploys FSD Beta software updates almost every weekend since its launch back in October.

Let’s watch some of the latest videos from the limited number of FSD Beta testers selected from the United States and mostly from California.

Tackling busy left turn

In the following video, the Tesla owner is freely cruising the city streets on Autopilot FSD Beta. During his drive with the FSD Beta 7, he said that he did not feel a major difference from the previous update but while taking n unprotected left turn, Tesla Autopilot showed its true colors.

The car took this left turn with the same caution a trained human driver would, proving that how much the Tesla Neural-Net is learning and teaching the cars with every new update (slide to 6:00 in the video).

#FSDBeta handles a busy left turn like a champ. It yields very well to cars coming from both sides and then turns.

Ducking for oncoming traffic

Owner of a unicorn silver Tesla Model 3, Kim Paquette is also one of the selected FSD Beta testers and continuously posts her testing videos online.

While testing FSD Beta in her Model 3, she was passing through a narrow street with vehicles parked on both sides of the road. When suddenly a Honda Civic came from the opposite side and there was not much space for both cars to pass by each other.

Sensing this situation, Tesla Autopilot did a very humanly thing, it ducked into an empty parking spot, to let the oncoming traffic pass by easily — very courteous of Autopilot FSD.

Maybe not FSD Beta 7 here but a cool trick by Autopilot.

Extensive FSD Beta 7 testing

The Tesla Model S with the nameplate AIDRIVR has also been on the FSD Beta testers list. The owner just recently posted the video of him testing FSD Beta 7 on the streets of Concord, California.

Autopilot got stuck one time after taking the right turn but was not able to change the lane as they merged, the driver had to take over. However, at another right turn, Autopilot made the correct decision, according to the owner, he did not see Autopilot do it so smoothly before.

While parked on the side of the road, Autopilot FSD Beta got stuck in an infinite loop of deciding the direction of making a turn as a pickup truck was also parked in front of it at a parking spot distance.

FSD Beta also slows down to 4-5 mph for the stop signs at intersections, it is cautious but does not come top a complete halt, maybe something to do with the California Stop Sign behavior the driver is talking about in this video.

Interestingly enough, Autopilot FSD Beta recognizes “no left turn on red light” signs now, it stops from making a right turn as we can see in the following test video.

Although public acceptance of Full Self-Driving will not be an easy task for Tesla or the entire auto industry as a whole but great things have faced resistance as history tells us, stay tuned.
