Tesla (TSLA) employees at the company’s European factory, Giga Berlin, celebrated the production of the 500,000th unit of Model Y electric SUV on Sunday.

The electric automaker started producing the Model Y at Giga Berlin in 2022. In March 2022, Tesla began customer deliveries of the European Model Y—the first and only car manufactured at the factory to date.

At the start of the production, like all car factories, there was a limited number of Model Y units made at the factory. However, Tesla has ramped up production at the factory, resulting in a staggering number of 500,000 Model Ys produced at Giga Berlin.

In February 2023, Tesla reported that Giga Berlin has reached a production rate of 4,000 Model Y units per week. However, the production average can fluctuate due to many internal and external factors.

The estimated current Model Y production rate at Giga Berlin stands between 3,000 to 4,000 units per week. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany, makes cars only for the European region, and these units are not exported outside of Europe.

It’s only around 5 years since Tesla laid the foundations of Giga Berlin. It’s a phenomenal achievement that the electric automaker started from the first pile driver to making 500,000 cars in just 5 years.

Tesla shared the above picture of the 500,000th Model Y production milestone via its official account on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) that shows the celebration at the factory.

The automaker started production at Giga Berlin with the now-legacy generation of the now-legacy Tesla Model Y. The above picture shows the new generation Tesla Model Y aka Juniper.

The new Model Y has design and engineering differences from the previous generation model. These changes require the retooling of the production equipment and assmbly lines at the factory.

Giga Berlin retooling for the new Model Y has slowed the rate of production at the Gigafactory. However, this slowdown is only temporary, and soon the production will ramp up at this location.

Tesla sold 1.2 million Model Y electric SUVs globally in 2023.

Last year (2024), Tesla delivered more than 1.7 million Model Y and Model 3 cars combined (didn’t disclose the specific number of Model Y units).

Tesla CEO Elon Musk believes that, like the year 2023, the Tesla Model Y will once again become 2024’s best-selling car globally (ICE & EVs combined). However, the data has yet to be announced, so fingers are crossed. Stay tuned for updates.
