Tesla & SpaceX CEO, serial entrepreneur, and the world’s richest man Elon Musk announced the formation of xAI, his new venture in the field of artificial intelligence.
Elon Musk announced the formation of xAI in one of his tweets just about an hour ago as of this writing. “Announcing formation of xAI to understand reality,” Musk tweeted.

Simultaneously, a website x.ai was launched along with a Twitter account @xAI. The home page of the xAI website clearly states the mission of the newly-formed artificial intelligence company — “Understand the Universe”.
“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the xAI website stated the reason for its existence on July 12, 2023.
The website of xAI further states the current state of the company as follows:
Our team is led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. We have previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.
Collectively we contributed some of the most widely used methods in the field, in particular the Adam optimizer, Batch Normalization, Layer Normalization, and the discovery of adversarial examples.
We further introduced innovative techniques and analyses such as Transformer-XL, Autoformalization, the Memorizing Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, and μTransfer.
We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4.

Why Elon Musk Created xAI
In 2015, Elon Musk was the initial board member of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. According to the following from earlier this year, Elon Musk even donated $100 million to OpenAI when it was a non-profit organization.
However, down the road, as OpenAI developed its AI software, Elon Musk and the other leaders at the company started having different opinions on the scope and use of the technology. These differences increased with time and Musk left OpenAI.
Years after Musk’s departure from OpenAI, the company with funding support from Microsoft delivered ChatGPT. ChatGPT started gaining popularity last year and Microsoft even integrated it in its Bing search engine.
“As part of their investment, Microsoft gained exclusive access to the entire OpenAI codebase,” Elon Musk tweeted earlier this year.
In another tweet from February this year, Elon Musk expressed his concern about how OpenAI became a for-profit company from what he intended it to be initially. Musk wanted the code to be open source but Microsoft gained control of the company and went against what Musk stood for.
With the rise of ChatGPT and the war between AI companies pushed Elon Musk to form his own company in this domain. He can now stand for the principles he wanted to implement at OpenAI to keep artificial intelligence safe for humanity.
Elon Musk currently holds two companies with huge datasets. Twitter and Tesla. Twitter garners millions of discussions, images, and videos daily. And the Tesla car fleet has already collected hundreds of millions of miles of self-driving data on Autopilot FSD Beta.
Just last week, Tesla participated in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. Tesla took its Autopilot cars and AI vision Optimus robot to the World AI Conference.
Under the guidance of Elon Musk, xAI can easily and legally leverage data from Tesla, Twitter, and even SpaceX to better understand our world and ultimately the Universe with AI technology.
